The purse started life as a pouch attached to a man’s waist. Its transformation into the elaborate and varied handbag of today’s marketplace is a marvel.
A history of the purse must begin in ancient times with men, the ones in charge of the important possessions. They carried these items in pouches, bags or purses, in every corner of the earth, as shown by ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs of men wearing purses at the waist.
